Both bets total up to $30 and the odds are only 2x the straight come bet, so if the shooter rolls a 9, the place bet will pay $42 whereas the come bet and odds will pay a total of only $40. Say you have $30 on 9 as a place bet and then $10 on the 9 from a come bet with $20 odds.
As long as you place odds on a come bet above a certain multiple of your straight up bet (3x for 4 and 10, 4x for 5 and 9, and 5x for 6 and 8), it'll pay out better in the long run. Come bets pay even money with odds paying 2:1, 3:2, and 6:5 respectively. For 4 and 10, 5 and 9, and 6 and 8, the odds for place bets are 9:5, 7:5, and 7:6.
